Lab Grown Diamond Resale Value: Offers and Selling Options

Lab grown diamond resale value needs to be established through a current offer for the particular diamond or jewellery piece. Your original purchase price alone does not tell you what a buyer will pay today.

Start by finding out whether a business accepts laboratory-grown diamonds. Then establish whether the proposed transaction provides cash, involves waiting for another buyer or offers credit towards a new purchase.

These distinctions matter because a resale estimate, an advertised listing price and a retailer’s upgrade allowance describe different things. The useful comparison is the amount you could receive, the conditions attached and the costs of completing the transaction.

Can you sell a lab grown diamond?

A sale requires a willing buyer who accepts your item. A business advertising diamond purchasing or jewellery auctions may have restrictions that exclude laboratory-grown diamonds.

For example, policy pages checked on 12 September 2026 show that Ritani Reclaim excludes laboratory-grown diamonds from its buyback programme. Worthy also lists laboratory-grown diamonds of every shape and size among the items it does not accept. These are the policies of those particular services. Ritani Reclaim’s eligibility requirements, Worthy’s acceptance criteria.

Before requesting a valuation, describe the item accurately as laboratory-grown. Include whether it is a loose stone or finished jewellery, its approximate specifications, available documentation and your location.

Ask for confirmation that the business will consider that type of item. This can save you from arranging transport or paying for preparatory work before eligibility has been established.

A declined enquiry tells you that a particular buyer will not proceed. It does not establish a completed resale price for the diamond.

Do lab grown diamonds hold their value?

You should not assume that a laboratory-grown diamond will preserve a particular percentage of its original retail price. Purchase dates, the amount originally paid and the offers available when selling can differ substantially.

Current market information also needs careful interpretation. In analysis published on 7 July 2026, Edahn Golan reported that average laboratory-grown diamond wholesale prices in Q2 2026 were 13% below the previous year. His benchmark draws on specified cash transactions for IGI-certified goods in Mumbai and Surat. It measures wholesale trading, rather than owners’ second-hand resale proceeds. Edahn Golan’s Q2 2026 market analysis.

The practical implication is to use current comparisons when considering an offer. An older invoice may reflect a different market and a different retail purchase.

However, a current new-diamond listing is still an asking price for another transaction. It does not establish what a business will pay to acquire your used stone.

Our lab grown diamond price guide explains how to read new-stone quotations and their inclusions.

Understand the selling route before comparing amounts

Once eligibility is confirmed, establish how the proposed arrangement works. The following routes involve different commitments and payment conditions.

RouteHow you receive money or creditWhat to establish first
Direct purchase by a businessThe business buys the accepted item for an agreed amountWhether the offer is preliminary or final, any deductions and the payment date
Consignment or auctionPayment depends on a sale to another buyerAcceptance criteria, commission, reserve arrangements, withdrawal terms and unsold-item charges
Private sale through a marketplaceYou agree a transaction with an individual buyerListing eligibility, payment arrangements, fees, delivery and dispute procedures
Original retailer’s upgrade programmeAn eligible item provides credit towards another purchaseOriginal-purchase requirements, minimum new spending, exclusions and geographical restrictions

These are arrangements to investigate. Availability depends on the specific business, platform and item.

For a direct purchase, ask whether the business is making its own offer or passing your item to other potential buyers. For an auction or consignment arrangement, establish when you become committed to selling and what happens if the item remains unsold.

A private listing can show what a seller hopes to receive. Even a listing marked “sold” needs context: the final agreed price, deductions and item specifications may not be publicly available.

Cash buyback and upgrade credit have different terms

An upgrade allowance can be useful if you already want another diamond. Its usefulness depends on the additional spending and restrictions attached.

Brilliant Earth’s published policy provides an example. Eligible loose laboratory-grown diamonds purchased from the company can receive credit equivalent to their original purchase price towards a new laboratory-grown diamond costing at least twice as much. Original documentation and saleable condition are required. The policy excludes coloured diamonds, settings and jewellery, and international orders other than those shipped to Canada. Original taxes and duties are excluded from the credit, and upgrade purchases are final sale. Brilliant Earth’s lifetime diamond upgrade policy.

That arrangement describes conditional purchasing credit. It does not establish an equivalent cash resale offer.

When evaluating an upgrade, request the complete new quotation. Calculate the additional amount payable after credit, including any setting work and applicable charges.

If your aim is to release money rather than buy another piece, ask specifically whether a cash purchase is available. A retailer’s willingness to provide upgrade credit does not answer that question.

Establish whether the offer covers the diamond or the whole ring

A loose diamond and a finished ring need clearly defined offers. If you submit a ring, ask whether the proposed amount covers the complete piece, the centre stone, the metal or selected components.

Request clarification if the buyer intends to remove the diamond. Establish who authorises the work, who pays for it and what happens to the setting if you decline the resulting offer.

Do not assume that dismantling a ring will improve the outcome. First ask whether a prospective buyer wants the jewellery intact and whether removal is necessary.

Likewise, keep any information about the maker, metal, additional stones and alterations with the item description. This helps prevent one buyer assessing the whole piece while another quotes only for its centre diamond.

What do a grading report and an appraisal tell you?

A laboratory report helps document what is being offered. IGI’s laboratory-grown diamond reports identify laboratory-grown origin and relevant gemmological characteristics. IGI also explains that a grading report is not itself an appraisal. IGI’s laboratory-grown diamond report guidance.

Keep the report number and available document with your sale enquiry. Ask what verification the buyer requires and whether any further examination is needed.

An appraisal must also be read according to its stated purpose. For example, IGI describes appraisal reports that calculate retail replacement value, alongside services for other valuation purposes. A replacement valuation addresses a different question from a buyer’s current purchasing offer. IGI’s explanation of appraisal services.

If you commission a valuation specifically for selling, explain that purpose before agreeing to the service. Ask what the resulting document will establish and how much it will cost.

How to compare resale offers

Give prospective buyers the same information: laboratory-grown origin, report details, photographs, condition, any known alterations and whether the setting is included. Where possible, obtain more than one current offer for that same item.

Record the quotation date, currency and expiry. Ask whether the amount is an estimate based on photographs or an offer following physical examination.

If inspection could change the amount, establish the process beforehand. Ask how a revised offer will be communicated, whether you can decline it and what return charges would apply.

Then calculate the amount remaining after the agreed selling costs:

Net proceeds = sale amount − commission − other agreed charges.

Depending on the arrangement, relevant charges may include payment processing, transport, insurance, examination or agreed work on the jewellery. Request an itemised explanation rather than assuming these are included.

For example, a larger proposed sale amount with substantial deductions may leave you with less than a smaller direct offer. An estimated auction result also remains uncertain until the relevant sale takes place.

Compare payment timing and transaction conditions alongside the amount. Keep written confirmation of what you are selling, the accepted price, deductions and when payment is due.

Frequently asked questions

Do lab grown diamonds have zero resale value?

A buyer declining an item does not establish a universal zero value. Equally, owning a laboratory-grown diamond does not guarantee an available buyer. Establish eligibility and seek an actual offer for the item before assigning it a cash resale value.

Can I get my full purchase price back?

Do not assume that a resale buyer will reimburse your original invoice. Check any applicable return or buyback terms from the original retailer. An upgrade programme may provide purchase credit under specific conditions, which should be assessed separately from a cash offer.

Can I sell a lab grown diamond without a certificate?

Ask the prospective buyer about its documentation requirements. It may require examination or a laboratory report before considering an offer. Before paying for new documentation, confirm that the item is eligible and understand the proposed costs.

Is my insurance appraisal the amount I will receive when selling?

Check the appraisal’s stated purpose. A retail replacement valuation describes an estimated replacement amount; it does not commit a resale buyer to paying that figure. Compare it with current offers only after recognising that distinction. IGI’s appraisal guidance.

Should resale expectations affect my buying decision?

If recovering money later is essential to your budget, establish any written purchase-related benefits before buying. Ask whether they provide cash or conditional credit and what restrictions apply. For the broader purchasing decision, read our guide to whether lab grown diamonds are worth buying.

Ask about your laboratory-grown diamond item

To discuss your situation, contact Uniglo Diamonds with the diamond’s laboratory-grown origin, available report details, photographs and whether it is loose or mounted.

Begin by asking whether your particular item can be considered for purchase or assessment. If it can, request the applicable process, costs and offer conditions before arranging delivery.
